Tanzboden Tour

Start point: Werfenweng village square
Distance: 14km
Time required: approx 5 hours
Metres in altitude climbed: 700m

This tour can be split into 3 sections. A relative flat start to the tour to Gamsblickalm followed by a steep section up to Elmaualm and the Tanzboden ending with a relatively comfortable descent to Samerhof and finally to Werfenweng. From the village square follow the Wengeraustraße in the direction of the valley head. You willpass the tennis courts and cross a brook and then continue through Ruhrdorf and finally to Wengerau car park where you will bear left towards Gamsblickalm. After 500m you will reach a junction where you can follow the road or a steep foot path over the high moor and finally to Elmaualm. You will need waterproof footwear as moors can be boggy. At the high moor bear right towards Elmaualm (1513m).

Shortly after Elmaualm you will find a spring which provides the last opportunity to fill water bottles before either the Werfener Hut or a spring on the varient. After crossing the Tanzboden you will reach a forest path which joins a track and ends at the Mahdegg-Alm. Enjoy the view of the rugged limestone features and the pine forest. After Mahdegg-Alm leave the track and join the footpath to the right. After crossing a brook you will finally reach Gasthof Samerhof. You now follow the route directly back to the village centre either by following the Zistelbergstraße or by taking a varient at Gasthof Zistelberg and following route number 55.
