Salzwelten - Salt mine

At the gates of Salzburg you can visit the oldest mine in the world open to the public. Salt, inconspicuous yet such a valuable gift from nature lay for thousands of years deep in the mountains. Discovered 2,500 years ago, the salt brought wealth and affluence to not just Dürrnberg but also Salzburg and helped to finance the "baroque jewel". This "white gold" gave the region, the city and the river their names.

Nowadays the mine is a favourite excursion destination. You will be hard pressed to find a school child who doesn`t know the mine with its 2 miner's slides, underground boat ride across the salt lake and an exciting ride in the mining carts!

Included in the price of a "Salzwelten Card" is a visit to the reconstructed Celtic village (open air museum) in Dürrnberg.

Open all year.

How to get there:

By car

Take the A10 motorway towards Salzburg. Exit Hallein. Straight on at the first 2 roundabouts and turn right at the 3rd. Straight on at the 1st set of traffic lights and then turn right at the 2nd set and after 100m turn left at the 4th roundabout. At the next junction turn right and then after 100m turn right once more. Follow the road for 1.5km.

By train

We recommend the "Salz Erlebnis Ticket" which includes train travel, the shuttle bus to the mine and the Saltzwelten Card. Price according to the departure station. Visit www.oebb.at for more information.
